SMEs must prepare for October’s Green Deal launch
Prepare now to qualify for Green Deal work from October 2012. The Green Deal aims to retrofit up to 14million UK homes with energy saving measures by 2020. How can SMEs take advantage?
There is a huge challenge to prepare in time for October 2012 launch. Although the final specification of requirements is still awaited, SMEs must plan now in order to get a share of the Green Deal market
With thousands of new low carbon jobs expected when Green Deal is rolled out in October 2012 and a £1.4bn cash injection into the economy, there will be many opportunities. Homeowners will benefit from energy efficient homes, lowering fuel bills and having warmer homes with no upfront cost. These benefits will translate to work for the construction industry by seeing a leap in demand for work.
For many trades, the Green Deal will cover a range of energy efficiency upgrades. The PAS 2030, a set of specifications and standards, will prevent unqualified installers compromising the energy efficiency of homes by carrying out poor quality work.
Installers will have to be certified by an accreditation body, which will grant accreditation if the installer meets the requirements of the PAS 2030 specification. To be able to win Green Deal work from October, SMEs need to prepare as soon as possible and attain the skills and qualifications needed.
The final requirements for Green Deal installers in the PAS 2030 will be launched at the end of January 2012. However, SMEs can start to plan their accreditation based around existing qualifications.
