A new team aimed at cutting energy waste was launched by Edward Davey today, by way of a newly created Energy Efficiency Deployment Office (EEDO) within DECC to drive energy efficiency policy.
The Green Deal will play a large role in their work which will support jobs in the insulation and construction industries – circa 65,000 across the UK by 2015.
The 50-strong team will be based at DECC’s headquarters in London and will work with leading industry experts to ensure the best possible evidence, analysis and policy response. EEDO members will support the delivery of the Green Deal, the rollout of smart meters and the increase in renewable heat. They will also develop a new energy efficiency strategy to identify further energy efficiency across the economy.
Did you know?
If all remaining 6 million lofts (with less than 100mm insulation) are lagged in the UK, the amount of insulation needed would stretch from London to Edinburgh and back.
11 million cavity walls have been insulated, saving people £100 a year – that’s £1 billion for the UK as a whole.
The Green Deal could save 21TWh of energy in 2020, equivalent to turning off two Sizewell B sized nuclear power stations.
The Green Deal alone - our plan to upgrade the nation’s draughty homes -is expected to support 65,000 jobs by 2015.
