Solar companies allowed to challenge Government

Posted on: 2011-12-15 16:25:52

A High Court Judge granted three companies permission to challenge the Government over action to cut subsidies for solar energy.

The court's previous decision not to grant permission was overturned and promptly granted SolarCentury, HomeSun and the Friends of the Earth the right to a judicial review as early as Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

The Government's decision to halve the feed in tariff for solar systems for all installations after 12 December was said to have given rise to "economic risk" for the solar industry and that the challenge should be heard as a matter of urgency.

The Government has admitted that any future amendments would need to be handled differently, but argued the scheme was cut to stay within budget and that the tariffs had been overly generous causing a surge of installations.
