Phyllis Prior Boardman attended an exclusive VIP Dinner for the Honourable Mr Julián Castro, Mayor of San Antonio, Texas and accompanying business leaders, together with Gregory Barker, Minister of Energy and Climate Change.  The invitation from the Director Americas, Foreign and Commonwealth Office was gratefully accepted and took place on Monday 19 November 2012 in the historic Entente Cordiale Room at London’s prestigious Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  This was a tremendous occasion for Phyllis to again represent the UK’s small business sector on green growth and the Green Deal.

UK Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker led a UK business trade mission to the southern United States (6-10 May 2012) to strengthen the UK-US trade relationship and build the economic and business case for a move to a low-carbon economy.  Only one of 5 businesses, which included  Rolls Royce, Phyllis visited Houston, San Antonio, and Atlanta, to highlight leading examples of UK sustainable business and show first-hand the compatibility of green and growth, as well as offering opportunities for companies to connect with new or existing business partners.

The City of San Antonio has set out ambitious goals to be recognized as a respectful steward of its natural resources and a model for responsible resource management as a part of “SA2020”. Through:

  • Improved Air Quality
  • Reduced Water and KWH Usage
  • Doubling the number of green jobs
  • Increasing energy generation from renewable sources
  • Reduced the amount of material going Into landfills
  • Increasing the City's Tree Canopy

In San Antonio, we visited:

  • Economic Development – on opportunities and incentives for UK companies in the City
  • Environmental Policy – on the range of work underway in San Antonio under the Mission Verde banner
  • North American Development Bank – on the wider regional economy and its offer for those present in San Antonio

San Antonio businesses joined the meetings.

Greg  Barker introduced UK companies and we all had a brief opportunity to explain our businesses and what we can bring to potential customers.

37 year old Julian Castro has been Mayor of San Antonio since May 2009.  He was re-elected in 2011 with 83% of votes cast in the City.  He and his brother (Joaquim – currently a candidate for the US House of Representatives) are both Harvard Law School graduates.

Major Castro, a Latino, is widely considered to be a future candidate for higher office.  His work on San Antonio’s greening agenda won public praise from President Obama during his 2012 State of the Union Address where the Mayor sat next to the first lady.

Castro’s stated goals are to drive growth and investment in San Antonio through an ambitious programme to develop a more environmentally sustainable economy.

Major Castro made a reciprocal visit to the UK week commencing 19th November 2012 and was received at the VIP Dinner.  Phyllis’s invitation can be seen above and she is pictured here with Mayor Castro and Greg Barker, Minister of Energy & Climate Change for the UK.
