The number of companies failing rose for the first time in a year yesterday as more cracks appeared in the fragile economy. Nearly 7,500 went to the wall between April and June, up 3.4% on the same period in 2010, according to data gatherer Equifax.  by Graham Hiscott, Daily Mirror 15/07/2011

But huge variations across the country saw some regions suffering more than others.

The North East saw failures rise by more than 20% on the year before, compared with an 11% drop in the Midlands.

And there were signs that even the resilient South East is beginning to feel the pain, with a near 15% jump in those going bust since the start of the year, with London up 9%.

Research also confirms the retail meltdown, with 568 shops going under – almost 16% up on 2010.

Equifax’s Neil Munroe, said: “Some have found it impossible to keep their heads above water.”
